Not exactly the same, but reminiscent of the old RKO Radio Pictures logo. I was going to post it,but there might be some copyright issues. In its heyday RKO produced the classic motion pictures Citizen Kane and the original King Kong.
Santorum or even Gingrich can spin all they like about their southern state victories, the basic math has not changed. Certainly conservative pundits and web sites that despise Romney can and will fantasize about all the possible scenarios they like, but Romney is well on his way to being the conservative presidential nominee. Romney Keeps Hanging On
In one sense, Romney is in good shape. If you run the numbers, it looks like Romney will be the nominee. If you look at the delegate count, Romney maintains a pretty strong lead, with about 438 delegates. Santorum has half as much as Romney, and Gingrich has about half as much as Santorum. Ron Paul has 48. Right now, that does make Romney the candidate most likely to get the 1,144 delegates required to clinch the nomination.
In fact, Romney even came out ahead in the delegate count after Tuesday night. Both Alabama and Mississippi allocate their delegates proportionately. Despite winning 33 percent of the vote to Romney’s 30 percent, Santorum will only get 13 of the states delegates, compared to 14 for Romney. Santorum did better in Alabama, with 19 delegates compared to Romney’s 11 delegates. But Alabama and Mississippi weren’t the only states in play last night. Wins in the Hawaii and American Samoa caucuses gave Romney 17 delegates, compared to 3 for Santorum. With more moderate states like Illinois and Maryland yet to hold primaries, it’s likely Romney will continue to add to his commanding lead in the delegate count.
With the math out of the way some insights into what conservatives are really looking for.
On the other hand, voters were more comfortable enough with Santorum to give him their votes, because he spoke their language. Santorum’s homilies on the evils of birth control and Satan’s work in the world wouldn’t be out of place in many Southern Baptist churches. Santorum may from a different church, but as far as evangelical voters are concerned, he’s singing from the same hymnal.
For primary voters in Mississippi and Alabama, it really wasn’t about the economy. In Alabama, 90% of GOP primary voters expressed concern about the economy. But, as Dave Johnson noted, there’s about a dime’s worth of difference between Romney and Santorum on economic issues. No matter which of the two you pick, you’ll get pretty much the same thing on economic issues.
It’s not even about beating Barack Obama. Only 40% of GOP primary voters in Mississippi and Alabama cited the ability to defeat President Obama as the main quality they’re looking for in a candidate. Other qualities were more important.
But that is not the only quality GOP voters crave. The three other options – having a strong moral character, being a true conservative and having the proper experience – when taken together attract more than half of the voters in every state so far. (emphasis mine)
One of the biggest issues of the conservative movement is its lack of morals. Conservatives are darn sure they have values and morals, they do, but they just happen to be twisted. Conservatives are not going to let go of the meme that allowing employees of Catholic collages and hospitals the same full access to all their health care insurance benefits is an intrusion on their freedom. 98% of Catholic women use contraceptives ( and 99% of all women). If all those women are truly in violation of church doctrine the wholesale excommunication of females from the church should have started weeks ago. In reality what conservatives and American catholic bishops are arguing for is the right of employers to impose conditions on how employees spend their compensation ( salary, employers contributions to 401ks and insurance are forms of compensation). Rational people fail to see how handing over powers that resemble the power of kings over serfs is a form of freedom. Conservatives do not want health insurers to provide the contraception directly to women. There is no difference between that and telling an employee they are withholding $8 from their paycheck because it is their understanding the employee might spend that money on beer or kosher food. It does not matter to conservatives that the cost of contraception – the employee is getting on their own via the insurance company will have the cost defrayed with the savings the insurer avoids by averting pre-natal and maternity services costs.
It is not moral to deceive a nation into war about wildly exaggerated threats as in the invasion of Iraq.
It is not moral to work over the course of fifty years to tear down the regulation that would likely have prevented the Great Recession. Conservative acknowledge we had a recession, but they have spun their own bizarre history of how and why it occurred. To bear such grossly false witness is immoral even by their own frequently strange contortions of religion and virtue. Conservative have sworn that low taxes create jobs – both Romney and Santorum promise more tax cuts. Taxes are at their lowest since 1959. Where are the jobs. creating that narrative and sticking to it for years is not just some white lie, a little difference of political opinion – it is a pernicious destructive charade that has hurt the vast majority of Americans ( see chart below). When such political stances do such vast harm to the nation they are no longer simple differences, conservatives have wrecked the kind of havoc and misery on the USA that our worse enemies dream of. These conservatives are looking for someone with values? They will not find such a person running for office as a conservative and they will not find one in the mirror.
If a liberal ever betrayed a CIA NOC agents identity for petty political revenge we’d see the pitchforks brigades. Conservatives actually started a defense fund, a campaign of disinformation and blatant lies to avoid responsibility. How good a patriot can one be to engage in such morally depraved behavior.
Rick Santorum is a recycled crook from the Bush era K-Street corruption scandals. Being a conservative has its benefits when it comes to corruption. That big C on their super cape deflects blame and guarantees forgiveness. What an easy moral road it is, the moral road of conservatism. For those who are morally corrupt, financially corrupt, negligent about responsibility, bereft of a conscience that contemplates one’s sins for longer than 5 seconds, I highly recommend conservatism. They will find a place for you. If you’re very good at propelling the propaganda you’ll never have to do an honest day’s work the rest of your life – see Rick Santorum, Pat Buchanan, Sarah Palin, Ann Coulter, Mitch McConnell, John Boehner – pretty much the entire flagship of conservative political leadership and punditry.
Conservatism is the movement that says programs like Medicare are Marxist and UnAmerican, yet passed the Medicare part D drug benefit. They lied about the costs and failed to fully fund it, but they passed their addition to that massive Marxist program.
Conservatives said that the invasion of Iraq was not just about killing people and oil, no sir, they claimed the ‘moral’ high ground saying it was about winning hearts and minds over to the cause of freedom and democracy. Than they gave us Abu Gharib, torture, humiliation and endangered the troops they claim to love. These moral conservatives also denied the troops they loved a decent pay rise. For seven years the fighting keyboarders on the far Right used the troops as fodder for propaganda. Conservative military analysts and that legendary liberal media lied to the public about the “war on terror”. maybe the reason conservatives are obsessed with morality is they cannot get a fix on reality, on a firm idea of what constitutes decent behavior. Morality is their white whale. Their pixie dust. They’re nor sure what it is but they have deep feelings in their hearts about the whole subject.
When conservatives hacked into Democratic party computers that was another squalid notion of conservative morality in practice. When conservatives used the U.S. Department of Justice as a political tool like some South American dictator advancing their radical agenda, that was justified by the greater good and all supreme nobility of conservationism in practice. Just the regular justifications of every extreme two-faced political movement in the last hundred years. Every one of them has hidden their sordid dangerous agenda behind the flag of nationalism. Its like smelling a stinking pile of rot and saying it smells like roses.
There is next to nothing – and that little bit probably bu accident that the morally bankrupt brand of conservatism can point to in the historical record and say this is an example of the good we did. Conservatism has been reduced to smearing children and telling tales of granite counter-tops. Conservative morality is a species of fungi reduced to making up urban myths about Muslim presidents, degrading war heroes, keeping their fortunes in Caribbean island banks. Conservatives have realigned themselves over the years, they have become, “ transmogrified into the party of hairy-backed swamp developers and corporate shills, faith-based economists, fundamentalist bullies with Bibles, Christians of convenience, freelance racists, misanthropic frat boys, shrieking midgets of AM radio, tax cheats, nihilists in golf pants, brownshirts in pinstripes, sweatshop tycoons, hacks, fakirs, aggressive dorks, Lamborghini libertarians, people who believe Neil Armstrong?s moonwalk was filmed in Roswell, New Mexico, little honkers out to diminish the rest of us, Newt’s evil spawn and their Etch-A-Sketch president, a dull and rigid man suspicious of the free flow of information and of secular institutions, whose philosophy is a jumble of badly sutured body parts trying to walk. Republicans: The No.1 reason the rest of the world thinks we’re deaf, dumb and dangerous.”I’ll have lunch with them. Be friends with conservatives. I’ll help a conservative neighbor change a tire or paint their house. What I will never do it take lectures or lessons on morality from people who wouldn’t know what morality was if it had bright green wings and flew up their ass.
Further proof. Smearing Sandra Fluke the first time around caused considerable bruising, so conservatives, like some spiteful devil-child from a horror movie must have their revenge – Conservatives move on to Anti-Sematic attacks on Fluke’s boyfriend
