I read the news today oh boy

If you have a pulse, then regardless of your political affiliations, gender, or cultural sensitivities there is something here to offend you or depress you. Or make you have one of those guilty laughs where you look over your shoulder and hoped no one has noticed what you're laughing about. 50 Worst Things to Happen to Music On Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band they write, And is there anyone alive who hasn't suffered a collapse of the will to live during 'When I'm Sixty-Four'?, well that is because those who do not yet have grey hair and an enlarged prostate are very good at pushing the idea out of getting old into a little closet in the right hemisphere of their brain because let's face it youth wouldn't be nearly as fun without the illusion of immortality. Sgt Pepper barely slipped in at number fifty. At the front spot is Kid's Today,

Back in our day, we didn't have any of yer fancy iPods and ringtones and downloads. We didn't have the luxury and convenience of your scrotum-rings and your World Wide Web logs. When we wanted to steal the new URIAH HEEP album, we couldn't just troll the Internet for it, we had to do it the old-fashioned way — by hiking to the store (uphill, both ways) and shoving 12" of vinyl under our sweaters (which we had to knit ourselves). That's why you sniveling whipper-snappers don't appreciate the real value of music. Or Uriah Heep. Now get the hell off our lawn!

Sharing your ill gotten goods was even worse, you had to put the LP in a brown paper bag to hide it from the RIAA peepers that used to skulk behind shrubbery to catch you taking it to a friends house where every last hiss and scratch would be recorded to cassette tape. I'm just making that up, I think.

While we're in looking back mode, Reefer Madness is available for free dowload.

Considered THE archetypal sensationalized anti-drug movie, but it's really an exploitation film made to capitalize on the hot taboo subject of marijuana use. Like many exploitation films of the time, "Reefer Madness" tried to make a quick buck off of a forbidden subject while skirting the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930.

Words to live by from Dick Cheney,

Vice President Dick Cheney had some tough words for Russia during his current tour of Lithuania. Cheney said Vladimir Putin's Russia is restricting the rights of its citizens and proclaimed that "no legitimate interest is served" by turning energy resources into implements of blackmail.

"And no one can justify actions that undermine the territorial integrity of a neighbor, or interfere with democratic movements."

UN Questions US On Detainee Abuse

The UN will question U.S. officials on potential detainee abuse, the AP reports. The U.N. Committee Against Torture will focus on allegations of secret CIA prisons and flights transferring suspects for possible torture in other countries, according to the AP. Because the U.S. is a signatory the the Convention Against Torture, it must report on its practices to the Committee.

Michael Isikoff connects the dots

So, in effect, the major plotters aren't being tried in order to cover up decisions made at the very top of the Bush Administration. Instead, the government tried to send a bit player to the death chamber, and the jury refused to go along.

I think the death penalty should remain as a tool in the prosecution's bag of options. In this case a just and in some ways cruel judgment was handed down. Life imprisonment on US soil guarded by people that Moussaoui hates. Much like giving Byron De La Beckwith life imprisonment with African American guards. What bothers me and should bother everyone as Mark Kleiman points out is that those intimately entangled with 9-11 and other muderous acts cannot be given a civilian trial because Bush has been so malicious in his single minded pursuit of breaking laws as he sees fit.

Rules of golf and all I can't call Little Donnie Rumsfeld pathological, on the other hand I can't keep people from thinking that he is, Rumsfeld: It Depends on what the Meaning of "Where" Is

SEC. RUMSFELD: Not at all. If you think — let me take that, both pieces — the area in the south and the west and the north that coalition forces control is substantial. It happens not to be the area where weapons of mass destruction were dispersed. We know where they are. They're in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat. '

Rumsfeld was asked about the failure already 9 days into the war to find any WMD. His answer was "we know where they are." It is unambiguous, unqualified. And now he is lying about that!

I read the news today oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn’t notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They’d seen his face before
Nobody was really sure
If he was from the House of Lords.
I saw a film today oh boy
The English Army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But I just had to look
Having read the book.
