Into the breach to brave the dryness that is economics, but at least it is easy to read, Why the Fed does what it does

It makes sense that the average American would be against rising interest rates – it makes it more expensive for consumers to borrow money, and it makes mortgages on homes more expensive. Hell, even investors don’t like rising interest rates – higher rates make investment more expensive for firms, and it tends to have slow down the economy in general, especially the housing market.

What people don’t understand, though, is that the FOMC and the Federal Reserve do not base policy on popular sentiment. In fact, the very reason the Fed is independent of the government is so that it is not swayed by political or popular pressures to act in a certain way. Furthermore, the FOMC’s mandate is not to promote as much growth as possible. Contrary to what some may think, the Fed has exactly two obligations to fulfill in its mandate: promote policies that will ensure maximum sustainable employment and ensuring price stability.

The former New York City police commissioner entered the pleas in a Bronx courtroom and was sentenced to a total of $221,000 in fines.

Two Views of Miami Terror Suspects: Die-Hards or Dupes
until his arrest some became disenchanted. Further, that at least when he started he was a It is interesting that of those involved, that Batiste was the master mind. That from the time he started the group upbeliever in a home grown American mix of a religion that included parts of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. We’re better off with them off the street especially in the case of Mr. Batiste, but there seems to be different levels of involvement and commitment to his goals. The remaining members did make some kind of oath to Al Qaeda, but it seems that once the group was broken up some were very cooperative in telling what they knew. Since most of them were from a very poor area and saw the groups initial religious teachings as a way to rise above the poverty and drug culture it is easy to see how they might be lead astray by someone who promised to make their lives better. This isn’t said as an excuse for what they were up to, but suggestes the reasons may be a little more complex then the simple minded reframe that this incident is a reminder that the west is at war with Isalm.

Dictionaries are updated all the time to expand on the definitions of known words and to include new words(the wordpress spellchecker keeps telling me that the word blog is misspelled. Time to update that dictionary). back in the days of dinosaurs, oh about seven or eight years ago, WMD or Weapons of Mass Destruction were defined as nuclear weapons. Some kind of nuke launched from within a missile, dropped from a plane, or launched by a ship or sub at sea. Then we entered the Age of the Chickenhawk or Chicken-little where chemical and biological weapons somehow became part of what is purely a political definition of WMD. So much so that frequently even liberals have adapted the reference. Conservatives are again seeking to expand the definition of WMD to include 20 year old buried degraded canisters of mustard and sarin gas. Munitions Found in Iraq Renew Debate

“Yes, these certainly are munitions,” Skelton added, “but they are not the evidence of prewar assertions made by the administration.”

The classified overview of chemical munitions says that U.S. forces have found about 500 shells, canisters or other munitions containing the chemical weapons. Lt. Gen. Michael D. Maples, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, told the committee the shells were produced in the 1980s for the Iran-Iraq war but were not used.

The following sounds more like something that would be said by children in a playground argument,

That caused Rep. Terry Everett (R-Ala.) to ask, “If some bad guys got this stuff and sneaked it into New York City and put it [into] the subways there, would it kill people?” Taken aback slightly, Maples responded, “Potentially . . . yes, sir, it would.”

If one has a super charged kool-aid induced imagination you could see the giant suitcase with sarin shell enclosed being checked into Miami International. Or one could imagine going down to the farm supply store and buying some ANFO and diesel fuel. Maybe I’m too pragmdic minded, but the later seems much easier and the results can be quite deadly as residents of Oklahoma City can testify. Sarin has been used in terrorists attacks and while quite good at inducing terror among the populace is not very effective at causing mass deaths. The sarin attacks in Tokyo, a very densely populated city produced 12 deaths and 54 injuries. The ANFO bombings in OC killed 168 people. The problem might be that my ideals are too high, that regardless of political affiliation if you’re elected to the U.S. Congress or Senate you’re supposed to act like a rational adult not a caricature of a farm animal that runs around squawking about improbable threats to the nation.

Rep. Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) noted that the administration’s prewar rhetoric, including a remark by then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice that “we don’t want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud,” helped push Congress’s October 2002 vote to authorize the use of force in Iraq.

That kind of language, Larsen said, “always has seemed to be much bigger than the facts that we end up reviewing in retrospect.”

The smoking gun and mushroom cloud image, he said, “sounds a lot better than 500 artillery shells of various amounts of degraded material that fit the technical definition of chemical weapons . . . buried in various bunkers in various states of disrepair that we are not even sure Saddam Hussein knew about.”

Rick Lasen, rational citizen. He must have gotten elected when Karl Rove was too busy exposing CIA agents to stop him.

P.S. Since I’ve managed to mentioned all the key words that that the NSA scopes up in their dragnet I would just like to welcome them and hope they’ll drop by once and a while to check up on the sane side of the political debate.

Iwill hold the candle till it burns up my arm
Oh, Ill keep takin punches until their will grows tired
Oh, I will stare the sun down until my eyes go blind hey,
I wont change direction, and I wont change my mind
How much difference does it make
Mmm, how much difference does it make…how much difference…

Ill swallow poison, until I grow immune
I will scream my lungs out till it fills this room
How much difference
How much difference does it make
