I’ll keep it short today, most people have better things to do today then read a weblog.
Yes, there are still gypsies in the world and while some of their nefarious reputation is well deserved it is not really fair to use them as scapegoats, Where to next for evicted Roma?
1) “According to our data there are cases of drug circulation in the village, but the absolute majority of the Roma population has nothing to do with it.”
2) “Practically all the people living in Dorozhny were registered in their houses. More, these houses and land were given to them by the Soviet authorities at the end of 1960s, after the well-known Decree of the USSR Supreme Council that abolished wandering and transfer to the settled way of life. In 2001 the local region court allowed Roma to register the documents for the land, which was annulled after the new governor of the Kaliningrad region, Georgy Boos spoke on TV. He stated that he disapproved the criminal record of the village and said he will “eliminate it with fire”. We believe that the real reason for driving the Roma out of their houses is the fact that the land has commercial potential and can later be sold at good price.”
Kind of a universal human behavior to find some group and project societies failings on that group and promise utopia is we could only get rid of “them”.
Agency officials said that tracking Mr. bin Laden and his deputies remained a high priority, and that the decision to disband the unit was not a sign that the effort had slackened. Instead, the officials said, it reflects a belief that the agency can better deal with high-level threats by focusing on regional trends rather than on specific organizations or individuals.
Well that really isn’t the point. If Meyer Lansky ordered a hit on someone, and the FBI caught some of his gang and then called it a day, declaring that they would get around to Meyer someday, would that be the right thing to do. Bin Laden ordered a hit on America and murdered thousands. If he is not brought to justice or proof of his death provided a crime goes unpunished with victims and their families without justice. In is somewhat reassuring that the CIA has begun to grasp the somewhat ethereal nature of Al Qaeda and that its existence is not dependent on one man. On the other hand the administration can’t seem to define the threat in any terms. Cheney has the semantic ability to do so, but would just lie since he seems to have a compulsive need to do so whenever he addresses any serious national security issue and poor Bush would have to have someone smart and articulate to write it all out on que cards.
Put Away the Flags
I think Howard gets it mostly right in this column, except equating the deaths at Pearl Harbor with those at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Pearl Harbor was just the beginning of, the initial phase of Japanese imperialism. Though I would agree that two nuclear devices was, and no pun intended, overkill. He is right that nationalism is one of the major rots eating away at American ideals. I can see its appeal. It is simplistic, on the surface it looks patriotic. The nationalists at the working class level are looking for easy answers. Conservatives leaders frame the answers in the most simplistic way and do so with conviction, real or counterfeit. Well let me stop there and turn the discussion over to someone that has studied the whole framing issue, George Lakoff tells how conservatives use language to dominate politics
The background for Rockridge is that conservatives, especially conservative think tanks, have framed virtually every issue from their perspective. They have put a huge amount of money into creating the language for their worldview and getting it out there. Progressives have done virtually nothing. Even the new Center for American Progress, the think tank that John Podesta [former chief of staff for the Clinton administration] is setting up, is not dedicated to this at all. I asked Podesta who was going to do the Center’s framing. He got a blank look, thought for a second and then said, “You!” Which meant they haven’t thought about it at all. And that’s the problem. Liberals don’t get it. They don’t understand what it is they have to be doing
President Bush told the special prosecutor in the CIA leak case that he directed Vice President Dick Cheney to personally lead an effort to counter allegations made by former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV that his administration had misrepresented intelligence information to make the case to go to war with Iraq, according to people familiar with the president’s statement.
Bush also told federal prosecutors during his June 24, 2004, interview in the Oval Office that he had directed Cheney, as part of that broader effort, to disclose highly classified intelligence information that would not only defend his administration but also discredit Wilson, the sources said.
But Bush told investigators that he was unaware that Cheney had directed I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, the vice president’s chief of staff, to covertly leak the classified information to the media instead of releasing it to the public after undergoing the formal governmental declassification processes.
Bush also said during his interview with prosecutors that he had never directed anyone to disclose the identity of then-covert CIA officer Valerie Plame, Wilson’s wife. Bush said he had no information that Cheney had disclosed Plame’s identity or directed anyone else to do so.
It seems like if your cause is righteous you wouldn’t feel the need to lie or obfuscate.
She gives me her cheek
when I want her lips
but I don’t have the strength to go
On the lost side of town
in a dark apartment
we gave up trying so long ago
On the stairs I smoke a
Mexican kids are shootin’
Hey baby, it’s the Fourth of July
Hey baby, it’s the Fourth of July
What ever happened I
so dry your tears and baby
walk outside, it’s the Fourth of July
