Until 2001, far fewer Americans were killed in any grouping of years by all forms of international terrorism than were killed by lightning, and almost none of those terrorist deaths occurred within the United States itself. Even with the September 11 attacks included in the count, the number of
Americans killed by international terrorism since the late 1960s (which is when the State Department began counting) is about the same as the number of Americans killed over the same period by lightning, accident-causing deer, or severe allergic reaction to peanuts.
It is sadly comic as Boing Boing points out even Israel, that many people including me have the impression that random daily terrorism is the norm, but even in Israel you’ll more likely to die from a car accident. Which leaves some Americans in the awkward position of trying to convince quite a few other Americans not to be afraid. The first step to reduce the chances of them dying is not to invade countries that had nothing to do with 9-11, but to buy a safer car and be a good driver. As this would put Fox News, dozens of right-wing pundits, and hundreds of fringe web sites out of business we might also have to come up with some kind of jobs program for paranoid conservatives. Brit Hume, Bill Kristol, and Ann Coulter among many others would, for the first time in their lives be forced to make an honest living.
“The poll results indicate that 50% of all Christian men and 20% of all Christian women are addicted to pornography,” said Clay Jones, founder and President of Second Glance Ministries whose ministry objectives include providing people with information which will enable them to fully understand the impact of today’s societal issues. 60% of the women who answered the survey admitted to having significant struggles with lust; 40% admitted to being involved in sexual sin in the past year; and 20% of the church-going female participants struggle with looking at pornography on an ongoing basis.
Having lived most of my life deep in the heart of the Bible Belt I think this poll is probably an underestimate of the tortured way in which many dogmatic southern church goers behave. By having such a puritanical public persona and suppressing thoughts and feelings its like filling up a balloon with too much hot air, it eventually bursts. If they had healthier attitudes to begin with they wouldn’t engage in obsessive behavior to the degree which they do.

The evangelical assault on secular values at home is no less dangerous than its Islamic variant. It’s a difference of degrees, not substance. The difference is hard to see when evangelicals eagerly thump for blood-letting abroad or stage-manage it like Boykin and his crusading commander-in-chief do. John Hagee is a Texas evangelical and leader of that hybrid known as the Christian Zionist movement. He commands a huge following and the ear of politicians, Bush among them. Earlier this month Hagee led a rally of 3,500 evangelicals at a Washington hotel, where he called Israel’s attacks on Lebanon a “miracle of God” and proof that Israel was doing God’s work. Hagee was quoted in The Wall Street Journal as saying that for Israel to show restraint would violate “God’s foreign policy statement” toward Jews. Bush sent Hagee a message of praise for “spreading the hope of God’s love and the universal gift of freedom.”
Do these folks have a special headset set to a frequency that gets supernatural messages piped in directly from a deity which they have created in their own image. Some of us are discussing life on one of those heavenly bodies called Mars. While others appear to be mentally stuck in the year 1000. Perhaps we need to rope off some far corner of the globe and let the middle east Taliban and the Evangelical Taliban have their own little recreation of the Crusades and let the rest of us sort out the world’s problems like rational residents of the 21st Century.
Quote of the day,
Today at a press conference, President Bush dismissed these concerns out of hand. Bush said, “You know, I hear people say, Well, civil war this, civil war that. The Iraqi people decided against civil war when they went to the ballot box.”
So makest thou faith an enemy to faith;
And like a civil war set’st oath to oath,
Thy tongue against thy tongue. O, let thy vow
First made to heaven, first be to heaven perform’d,
That is, to be the champion of our church!
What since thou sworest is sworn against thyself
And may not be performed by thyself,
For that which thou hast sworn to do amiss
Is not amiss when it is truly done,
And being not done, where doing tends to ill,
The truth is then most done not doing it:
The better act of purposes mistook
Is to mistake again; though indirect,
Yet indirection thereby grows direct,
And falsehood falsehood cures, as fire cools fire
Within the scorched veins of one new-burn’d.
