4 Men Charged in Plot to Bomb Kennedy Airport

“Once again would-be terrorists have put New York City in their crosshairs and once again the F.B.I., New York Police Department and other law enforcement agencies have joined forces to stop them,” said Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly.

If we are to believe the shrill paranoia of the Right since 9-11 this scenario cannot be true: 1. Iraq is the front of the war on terror, Bush’s flypaper to which all the world’s terrorists are focused like a laser beam. So much so that we’re “fighting them over there” so we don’t have to fight them over here. 2. The plot was disrupted and stopped by police work and terrorism can only be stopped by occupying Iraq. Terrorism in general is a problem which only the military with our very own draft avoiding coke snorting alcoholic Commander Guy can stop. One of the plotters was Guyanese( Guyana is just north of Brazil and a country with a population that is primarily Christian, though the plotter was apparently a Muslim). One other plotter was from Guyana and the three others were from Trinidad ( Trinidad is a democracy with a government modeled after the U.K. with Roman Catholics (26%) and Hindus (22%) being the largest religions followed by Anglicans (8%) and Muslims (6%). The Mahablog ( Thrill Rides ) gives us this snip from a Republican blogger called Strata-Sphere

The threat is from people getting here legally so they can operate without much suspicion. Illegal entry, as with 9-11, attracts too much unneeded attention. We have dodged a bullet again. We have probably used the NSA surveillance program to monitor the calls to the overseas partners in this attack. We probably started without a FISA warrant but graduated to one just as Bush said the program would work. And all of this is being missed by the far right which is off complaining about being insulted because they do not have Bush in their corner on one issue. And their solution? Walk away and let more liberals get elected so they can tear down the NSA program and make the illegals citizens immediately.

Strata’s post is a veritable stuffed pepper of right-wing pet peeves. The stuffed pepper metaphor gives him too much credit, more like thin gruel: 1. The supposition that it is not enough to stop illegal immigration which is something most Americans of every political stripe support, but to close the door on even legal immigration. The implication is clear, stopping immigration will stop crime, because all crime of course is committed by immigrants. Terrorism is just a special name for hurting people that gives the Right an excuse to act like scared bunnies.

“We have probably used the NSA surveillance program to monitor the calls to the overseas partners in this attack.” Your honor I believe the witness in this case has done a little shadow dance around the facts. He asserts that Bush’s warrant less NSA program was “probably” used, the “probably” gives him denibility, but he has injected pure conjecture as though it was informed opinion….The concept that the 4th Amendment and FISA laws is endangering lives is probably giving Stalin’s ghost a chuckle and is introduced without the slightest of facts in evidence. Strata distances himself from the far Right while at the same time playing the Right-wing demonize the liberals card, ” let more liberals get elected so they can tear down the NSA program and make the illegals citizens immediately” – that’s it boys and girls Hillary’s secret plan to open up all our borders and burn down the NSA – he doesn’t produce any evidence to support that, but when have facts ever been an occupation of the Right. Democrats have not introduced or suggested a complete amnesty for illegals and have simply suggested that the president and the NSA are not above the law – concepts that the Right has made known they view with contempt. Strata picks a fight with a very weak straw man and wins, another conservative that can only win when they fight with shadows – their bravery never ceases to amaze. Strata and the Right has already built themselves a house of myths, distortions and foundation-less extrapolations in order to pump up a serious crime plot into yet another grave threat to all of mankind and our way of life. And the rest of us are left counting our losses. There are too few African-American voices in the progressive blogosphere anyway, but Steve’s was simply irreplaceable.

The News Blog was an exceptional blog. Sometimes I would read a news story and I would have a rush of rumbled thoughts about it then I’d click over to both Steve and Digby to see if they had posted anything on that story yet. Steve had a great way of blowing away the fog and getting to the substance that was truly a gift. It was like a light would go off, oh yea I see what’s really going on now. No he wasn’t always right, but he hit more then he struck out by far. So anyway best of thoughts to his family and friends

America should be down on its knees giving thanks that Dubya Bush the Grand Pooh Pah of all Grand Pooh Pahs of conservative foreign policy is at the helm, Putin threatens to target Europe with missiles

In an interview with the Globe and Mail, Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to target Europe with missiles, including potentially nuclear weapons, in a dramatic escalation of his Cold War-style showdown with the United States.

Mr. Putin, in an interview at his country residence outside Moscow, said he considers U.S. plans to build an eastern European anti-missile site to shoot down Iranian missiles a provocation aimed at Russia.

Asked what he might do to retaliate, he said he would return Russia to the Cold War status where missiles were aimed at European targets.

“It is obvious that if part of the strategic nuclear potential of the United States is located in Europe, and according to our military experts will be threatening us, we will have to respond,” he said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin poses a dilemma: Even as he has isolated Russia from the world by burning relations with allies and suppressing democracy, his popularity at home has grown.

“What kind of steps are we going to take in response? Of course, we are going to get new targets in Europe.”
He suggested that this could include powerful nuclear-capable weapons.

You don’t have to be even remotely expert in nuclear weapons to know that stationing nuclear weapons in Europe is not the least bit necessary to hit or deter Iran. This is yet another disastrous paranoid muscle flexing bit of nonsense from grown men too insecure to go to the bathroom alone much less make national security decisions. No reason to be upset though. This is another nail courtesy the neocons in the coffin of a conservative majority in America for the next three generations.

The Troop Funding Trap By Michael Kinsley and a post on this article at TalkLeft Truthtelling on Iraq Funding From Michael Kinsley . Kinsley and TL both make good points. The problem is that that Congress could keep making slight rewrites of the same funding bill with deadlines and so forth and Bush would just continue to veto them. Maybe you can do that twice with the effect of making Bush look more obsessed and boneheaded then he already does. The third veto of the same bill would make the Democrats look silly. Iraq is Bush’s war and his failure, as is the failure to bring stability to Afghanistan. It took them too damn long, but the majority of the American people know who to blame and its not Democrats. They gave Bush everything he has asked for and Bush failed. Period.
