Bush’s Iraq legacy the gift that keeps on giving, Arming insurgents in Iraq

In recent months, Gen. David Petraeus charged that Iran has supplied powerful rocket-propelled grenade launchers to Shiite militias in Iraq. But according to the U.S. government’s own reports, there is no evidence to support that charge. In fact, the vast majority of RPGs in the hands of Shiite militants have come from either U.S.-purchased weapons intended for Iraq’s new security forces, or from Saddam Hussein’s old stockpiles, which the U.S. failed to secure when it took control of the country.

The Bush administration has long sought to create the impression that Iran has been playing a major military role in Iraq by supplying arms to Shiite militias, including the cleric Muqtada al-Sadr’s powerful Mahdi army. But to date, U.S. military officials have offered scant or even dubious evidence of Iranian military involvement in Iraq — and Petraeus’ allegation about the RPGs is a clear-cut case of unsubstantiated charges.

The story gained little traction at the time, but around the 2004 presidential elections it was discovered that America’s genius commander-in-chief George “national security” Bush and his trustee side kick Little Donny Rumsfeld failed to secure munitions sites. Said sites were thus looted and were a contributing factor in U.S. and Iraqi civilian casualties. McCain is claiming that he’ll be equally brilliant as commander-in-chief. McCain is off to a great official start in the presidential race. Sam Stein, a smart guy and professional writer says this is a large gaffe. Gaffes are very different from malicious falsification, McCain’s Day Marked By False Statements And Gaffes

Appearing at a press conference in Louisiana on Wednesday, McCain claimed that he had supported “every investigation” into the flawed response to Hurricane Katrina, when, in fact, he had twice voted against creating a commission to inspect the tragedy.

Bush and Cheney as you’ll recall tried to stop the creation of the 9-11 Commission and tried to avoid testifying at all; when they finally agreed to it was in private and not under oath. Conservatives are consistent about resisting any investigation into what happens on their watch. Though there is also an element of hubris, the attitude that how dare anyone question much less investigate a Republican’s actions. An attitude that takes an obvious 180 when it comes to even a hint of wrong doing bt Democrats.

Stein also mentions what could pass for a gaffe, but considering that McCain is hitching a ride on the right-wing train of being the nation’s daddy’s of national security it smacks more of the despicable Swiftboat style attacks that we’ve come to expect from the Right,

McCain acknowledged he was not aware that Obama had introduced a bill that called for international divestment from Iran.

Reporter: Are you familiar with his disinvestment bill?McCain: No, I am not familiar with it at all. I do not know if it passed the senate or had any hearing or anything else. I had, so, literally thousands and thousands pieces of legislation are proposed every year. I know what he did. He voted against the Iranian revolutionary guard being declared a terrorist organization.

Sen.  Obama gave this speech in very staunch support of Israel, “We Must Preserve Our Total Commitment to Our Unique Defense Relationship with Israel” after which and actually during the speech received some standing ovations. The increasingly shrill and addled Sen. Joseph Lieberman then uses the opportunity to trash Obama’s foriegn policy credentials. This would be the same Lieberman who is one of the co-sponsors of Senator  Obama’s bill for for international divestment from Iran. Not much of a coincidence that as Joe has moved to the Right the more dishonest and dishonorable his behavior has become. McCain pretends or really doesn’t know the bill even exists as Lieberman seems determined not to give Senator Obama credit.

DeLay On Obama: ‘Unless He Proves Me Wrong, He Is A Marxist’. I’ve always thought that Tom might be a Nazi and child molester, unless he can prove he is not we can all just assume that Delay is. Great game, let’s all play Name of Republican…………… is………….until he/she proves they’re not.
