All the clamour about off shore drilling seems odd since we already do in fact have off shoreoil drilling and the oil comapnies haven’t even started using their leases for some sites, Oil companies have lots of leases to drill
First, the oil companies in this country now hold 7,000 leases to drill offshore, yet only 20 percent of those leases are producing oil. That is 68 million acres for which they already have the rights to drill. Nearly 80 percent of our offshore oil is already available for leasing — approximately 54 billion barrels total. They could be drilling in these areas, but they are not.
Assuming oil companies drilled in new areas, it would take at least a decade for new production to begin. Just last week, the U.S. Energy Information Administration concluded new drilling would have no impact on oil prices before 2030.
Its a mystery as to why so many people have suddenly decided that off shore drilling will return us back to the glory days of two dollar a gallon gas. Even if the unused leases were started soon they would not produce enough oil to lower gas prices.
A funny take on McCain’s latest ad which seems to imply that Obama is either Moses or the anti-Christ, Damn You Obama For Being So Cool!
Oh for the halcyon Eschaton-mongering days of the Daisy girl ads.
Give me, please, the salacious insidiousness of the Swiftboat Vets for Truth.
Give me any of that over McCain’s low: the Britney/Paris/Obama ad.
And I don’t mean low as in: low-class, cheap shot and underhanded. I mean low as in: “I pay you guys all that money, and this is the best you can come up with?”
The best political ads have always had text and subtext; the obvious and the arcane. The obvious text of B/P/O is: “would you all stop loving this guy so much, please!” The whole ad seems like an open admission by Camp McCain that, yes, Obama is young and hip and cool, and our guy has trouble ripping songs onto his iPod unless his grandkids are around to help him.
Maybe its a good thing that McCain and his Rovian campaign crew thinks this ad is great. It has a weird vibe to it. Kind of one part Washington Times/moonies and one part Scientology. Is McCain running as a cultist now, trying to paint Senator Obama as the guy that will break up the cult. Maybe its genuine envy. Obama the guy that people actually like versus the cranky old guy that you invite over for Thanksgiving because you feel sorry for him. Either way McCain the mentality pushing these ads isn’t exactly a class act.
McCain was also part of that huge echo about the anthrax/Iraq link after 9-11, One Month After 9/11, McCain Said Anthrax ‘May Have Come From Iraq,’ Warned Iraq Is ‘The Second Phase
Today, the LA Times reports that the individual who may have been responsible for the 2001 anthrax attacks that killed five people and sickened 17 others apparently committed suicide. As Atrios recalls, shortly after 9/11, conservatives were pinning the blame for the anthrax attacks on Iraq, laying the groundwork for a subsequent invasion. John McCain was part of this fearmongering effort.
This Grim Jokester wants to the next commander-in-chief. We’ve already had one Chicken-Little CIC and that didn’t work out too well.
Pam at Pandagon has done some extensive homework on a right-wing outfit that sounds more like political AstroTurf combined with money laundering then an actual political group, Black Republican PAC’ fronts for direct mail wingnut welfare
Well, my father in law got a mailing from “Black Republican PAC”. It was full of mis-statements and bald faced lies. It was so preposterous, full of mis-spellings and grammatical errors, that I believe it was created by an 8th grader. Anyway, the point of the mailing was to ask for money to defeat Obama.
The letter started me thinking. Is there a list somewhere of PAC’s who are anti-Obama. Not only a list, but something more, like background information on the organizers, the financiers, that kind of information that would act as truth in advertising.
I found next to nothing on Black Republican PAC or Edward Cousar when I googled them, so more information might be helpful.
