The Republican Magic Show, Much Smoke and Little Substance

On 7th Anniversary Of Attacks, White House Claims Bin Laden Was Not The ‘Mastermind’ of Sept. 11. An odd claim since as TP notes former Bush press Secretary called Bin Laden the mastermind. We’re glad that Bin Forgtten’s second in command Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is in jail, but Khalid’s plan wasn’t the one that was carried out on 9-11. Khalid’s plan, as far as we know was altered by Laden to what eventually became the actual plan carried out on 9-11-2001. So why the tortured twist of who did what and who was in charge. It gives the Bushies, at least in their minds, a rhetorical notch to put on their belt. Inadvertently giving the 9-11 conspiracy crowd another bone to chew on. That probably doesn’t bother Bush and his supporters like John McCain too much, the more static in the national debate about who did what , who is responsible and who failed at what ( like not catching Bin Laden at Tora Bora) benefits the Rightie noise machine. Bush and Cheney, as would befit leaders of a 21st century democracy have never gone on a cross country campaign trying to clarify all the myths 9-11 and Iraq. According to a poll by Newsweek in 2006 58% of the American public elieved that Bush mislead them about Iraq. Depending on whether you take a half full or half empty view that means that just two years ago 42% of the American public didn’t have a clue. John McCain hasn’t helped much just a few months ago McCain claimed that Iran, a predominantly Shiia country was training terrorists for the Sunni group Al Qaeda. He made the same “gaffe” three times. Once its a gaffe, maybe two, but not three. It does seem to help McCain in the polls on national security to keep voters confused and he seems happy to oblige. There is the possibility that McCain really doesn’t know the difference between Shiia and Sunni. which at this juncture is deeply irresponsible for the leader of the free world. Of course his running mate Sarah Palin just a few months ago was confessing that she wasn’t sure what the vice-president of the U.S. does. That would partly explain why McCain considers Palin his soul-mate. He gets to act like the know it all daddy. At one point in this new press briefing current White House press secretary Perino claimed that it would take “superpowers” to catch bin Laden – makes you wonder about the very shrill Republican claims by Bush, McCain and others that they’re the ever so serious and astute party when it comes to national security.

Seven plus years and, wait, its time to change course, Top Military Officer Urges Major Change in Afghanistan Strategy

The nation’s top military officer issued a blunt assessment yesterday of the war in Afghanistan and called for an overhaul in U.S. strategy there, warning that thousands more U.S. troops as well as greater U.S. military involvement across the border in Pakistan’s tribal areas are needed to battle an intensifying insurgency.

Many people are nice. They have the ability to project a pleasant persona. For some people its genuine. For some niceness is something they assume in order to make a living, like con artists. Sarah Palin probably for the most part believes she’s nice and she probably is some of the time. On the other hand much of what she’s done just doesn’t match up with the image she is trying to project as reformer and just one of the folks, Palin Lobbyist Worked For Jack Abramoff

The Washington Post reports today that, while Mayor of Wasilla, Palin oversaw the hiring of a lobbyist, Steven Silver — a former chief of staff to now-indicted GOP senator Ted Stevens — to help win federal earmarks for the city.

But Silver appears to have additional ties that could further undercut Palin’s image as a squeaky-clean reformer. According to Senate lobbying disclosure reports examined by TPMmuckraker, from 2002 to 2004 Silver listed as a client Jack Abramoff’s lobbying firm, Greenberg Traurig. On Greenberg’s behalf, Silver lobbied the federal government on “issues relating to Indian/Native American policy,” “exploration for oil and gas” and “legislation relating to gaming issues” — the very issues that Abramoff headed up for Greenberg at the time. In other words, Silver appears to have been a part of “Team Abramoff.”

For those that do not remember, Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff is sentenced to 4 years in prison

If you look up Convervatism in a political science text book you’ll get the usual stuff about supposedly being fiscally responsible, pro tradition, etc. They almost never are in practice, but one thing they will never be described is as orginal. They have a So its is not much od a surprise that regardless of the mountain of evidence to the contrary McCain-Palin are running on the “change” theme, McCain hijacks Obama’s ‘change’ theme

I liked his impassioned statement that he hates war, but he is the militant hawk who said the Iraq war could last 100 years. And, of course, McCain has got to be kidding when he tries to portray himself as running against “Washington,” whatever that means. He has spent 26 years in the nation’s capital and has accrued a record that is hardly unblemished.

They should start adding thieves and liars to the standard text book definition of Republicans. Most of their leaders are most of the time. Its been a rewarding way to get and keep power. The broadcast media and much of the public as of today are not talking about rescuing a battered and bruised Constitution courtesy John McCain ad his party, they’re talking about pigs and lipstick. McSame and the McCainiacs are the people that think they’re reformers and have the answers as they make long twisted impassioned pleas to please believe them Senator Obama is using age old analogies to get in zingers against a poor defenseless soccer mom who would rather be known as a dog that wears lipstick. Yet another magic trick. Win by turning every word that comes out of Senator Obama’s mouth into an insult, whine about how victimized Republicans are as the Republican attack machines tells the most egregious lies about Senator Obama.

Under Palin, Wasilla charged rape victims for exam

Eight years ago, complaints about charging rape victims for medical exams in Wasilla prompted the Alaska Legislature to pass a bill — signed into law by Knowles — that banned the practice statewide.

“There was one town in Alaska that was charging victims for this, and that was Wasilla,” Knowles said

A May 23, 2000, article in Wasilla’s newspaper, The Frontiersman, noted that Alaska State Troopers and most municipal police agencies regularly pay for such exams, which cost between $300 and $1,200 apiece.

“(But) the Wasilla police department does charge the victims of sexual assault for the tests,” the newspaper reported.

She must have learned compassion from George Bush.
