Limbaugh Goes on Another Racist Rant

Civil Rights Leader Rep. John Lewis Responds To Limbaugh’s Gun Claim: We Chose Non-Violence

Earlier on Friday, Limbaugh had asked on his radio show, “If a lot of African-Americans back in the ’60s had guns and the legal right to use them for self-defense, you think they would have needed Selma?” He continued, “If John Lewis, who says he was beat upside the head, if John Lewis had had a gun, would he have been beat upside the head on the bridge?”

During the 1965 march from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery in support of voting rights for African-Americans, state troopers beat the unarmed protesters on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Lewis suffered a concussion.

Responding to Limbaugh today, Lewis said in a press release:

“Our goal in the Civil Rights Movement was not to injure or destroy but to build a sense of community, to reconcile people to the true oneness of all humanity,” said Rep. John Lewis. “African Americans in the 60s could have chosen to arm themselves, but we made a conscious decision not to. We were convinced that peace could not be achieved through violence. Violence begets violence, and we believed the only way to achieve peaceful ends was through peaceful means. We took a stand against an unjust system, and we decided to use this faith as our shield and the power of compassion as our defense.

“And that is why this nation celebrates the genius and the elegance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s work and philosophy. Through the power of non-violent action, Dr. King accomplished something that no movement, no action of government, no war, no legislation, or strategy of politics had ever achieved in this nation’s history. It was non-violence that not only brought an end to legalized segregation and racial discrimination, but Dr. King’s peaceful work changed the hearts of millions of Americans who stood up for justice and rejected the injury of violence forever.”

There are a fw takeaways from the Limbattery of history. Limbaugh continues to seal his reputation for being both the titular head of the conservative movement and thus the most visible part of its racist elements. PBVV in the comments saved me the trouble of writing out the actual verbage of what Limbaugh said. If MM’s version sounds offensive, blatantly and unrepentantly evil, well it gets worse,

If John Lewis, …~long pregnant pause~…who sayz he wuz beat-up-side-da-head, ..~pregnant pause again~….if John Lewis had had a gun, would he have been
beat-upside-da- head, on the bridge?

His disgusting, racist mocking of John Lewis ( whose wife was just laid to rest last week) should be broadcast far and wide, all weekend.

While it was one of the first things that popped into my head on listening.reading that garbage, credit to conservative David Frum @davidfrum on Twitter for saying it as well, “And to this day, Limbaugh always on side of armed black protesters when they confront state troopers & sheriff deputies”. It certainly is not the John Lewises or Barack Obamas druming up racial divisions. In Sept. of 2009 Limbaugh and some other denizens of far Right conservative punditry seemed to be doing their best to start a national wave of race based animosity, I Believe Rush Limbaugh Calls For a Race War

Here’s Rush Limbaugh’s take on this all:

Hey, look, folks, the white kid on that bus in Belleville, Illinois, he deserved to be beat up. You don’t know about this story? Oh, there’s video of this. The school bus filled with mostly black students beat up a white student a couple of times with all the black students cheering. Of course the white student on the bus deserved the beating. He was born a racist. That’s what Newsweek magazine told us in its most recent cover. It’s Obama’s America, is it not? Obama’s America, white kids getting beat up on school buses now.

And then’s here’s the real story:

A student on a Belleville West High School bus was beaten for his choice of seat, not because he was white, according to a witness and police.

“The incident appears now to be more about a couple of bullies on a bus dictating where people sit,” said Belleville Police Capt. Don Sax, who originally said Monday’s attack may have been racially motivated.

Civil rights protesters should have guns – and one assumes use them to win their civil rights. But wait black kids across America are beating p white kids and it is all Obama’s fault (Drudge and Bill O’Reilly have contributed their share of venal hypocritcal narrative as well). Does it make sense when you read it in the same place. Is it a cogent narrative that has some legitimate concerns about race relations, violence, guns or civil rights. Of course not. Their minds are fetid swamps of vitriol. They just shovel it out to the public, trying their best to inflame resentment, if not violence.

True sons of freedom, 1918 by  Charles Gustrine. African American soldiers fighting German soldiers in World War I, and head-and-shoulders portrait of Abraham Lincoln above. The quote from Lincoln reads, ” Liberty and freedom shall not parish.” There is a time and place for arms and using them to fight for freedom. Conservatives cannot seem to make those distinctions.
